In June 2024, we experienced a growing demand for interpreting services in Sussex and southeast England. This trend aligns with the region’s growing diversity, with more residents and visitors from non-English-speaking backgrounds. Local authorities, healthcare providers, and legal institutions have noted an uptick in bookings for professional interpreters. This surge reflects not only the need for essential communication but also the trust clients place in professional interpreting services.

June 2024 marked another busy month for Vandu Languages. We've been working hard to connect communities and empower individuals through the power of language. Join us as we celebrate our achievements and dive deeper into the trends shaping the interpreting landscape this month.

In June 2024, we had:

Arabic remained the most requested language for interpreting services:

The most requested languages in June 2024 highlight the linguistic diversity across southeast England and London. The Top 10 Requested Languages for interpreting services were Arabic, Pashto, Sudanese Arabic, Kurdish Sorani, Persian (Farsi), Bengali, Polish, Turkish, Russian, and Dari. These languages reflect the communities most in need of linguistic support and highlight the importance of tailored services that cater to specific cultural and communication needs.

A significant shift occurred this June as Sudanese Arabic surged into the top three for the first time in over a year, with 116 requests. This rise displaced Kurdish Sorani, which recorded 89 requests. Sudanese Arabic not only secured third place but came close to overtaking Pashto for the second spot. This increase is largely attributed to recent migratory patterns, particularly among those fleeing the war in Sudan.

Fortunately, we are well positioned to meet this demand, as many of our most experienced interpreters come from Sudanese backgrounds, offering both linguistic expertise and cultural insight.

June 2024 also saw an increased need for interpreting services in Crawley, driven by the arrival of several Chagossian families. As members of the Chagossian community continue to settle in southeast England, particularly in Sussex, there has been a notable rise in requests for interpreters who are familiar with Chagossian Creole and the specific cultural context of these new residents. One of our interpreters, Sonia (see below), has been instrumental in supporting these families.

We want to congratulate and thank our Top 5 interpreters of the month:

Their understanding of their languages and culture has made them an invaluable asset this month, facilitating communication in vital areas such as housing, healthcare, and social services.

The Future of Interpreting Services in Sussex

As Sussex and southeast England continue to diversify, the role of interpreters will only grow in importance. Whether through remote technology, specialised training, or an emphasis on cultural competence, interpreters are at the forefront of ensuring that everyone can access the services they need, regardless of language barriers.

Reflecting on June 2024, it’s evident that interpreting services are not just about language—they’re about understanding and trust. Service providers in southeast England have shown that by adapting to new challenges they can continue to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population.

In conclusion, as we look ahead, the key to effective interpreting services in southeast England lies in staying responsive to community needs. Whether you’re a healthcare provider, legal professional, or educator, investing in quality interpreting services remains essential to creating inclusive environments where everyone’s voice can be heard.
