Racism and Inclusion: International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Did you know that since 1966, the 21st of March has been designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination?

The 2024 theme is “A Decade of Recognition, Justice, and Development: Implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent.”

This theme is linked to the proclamation of the decade from 2015 to 2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent, which aims to ‘promote a greater knowledge of and respect for the diverse heritage, culture, and contributions of people of African descent to the development of societies’.

Current estimates suggest that approximately 12 million to 12.8 million Africans were forcibly transported across the Atlantic over a span of 400 years. Coupled with more recent migration trends, the global African diaspora, comprising communities descended from people of African origin, totals over 170 million individuals globally.

Today, the Vandu Languages team extends an invitation to contemplate the perceived perceptions that each of us possesses regarding individuals from diverse ethnicities and cultures whom we encounter daily.

Have we encountered instances of racism within our immediate surroundings, such as at home, within social circles, educational institutions, or the workplace? Have we experienced racism firsthand? Have we, perhaps unwittingly, engaged in racist practices in the past?

Racism can manifest in various forms, some more subtle than others. It is essential for us to engage in daily introspection and approach interactions with others from a stance of humility. Doing so enables us to glean insights from the unique perspectives and contributions of each individual.

We also take this opportunity to announce the launch of Vandu Training, our newly established consultancy and training division specialising in providing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) courses tailored for organisations, businesses and teams across the UK.

If you are interested in exploring our offerings, including our Anti-Racism and Inclusion Workshop, please visit our new website or contact us at training@vandu.co.uk.
