A new TV show released on Chinese television called ‘Les interpreters’ (the interpreters) is based on a famous Chinese novel, Dear Interpreter.

The story is between a university student specialising in French studies, and a professional interpreter. Mixed with romance and drama the show could give a real insight into a profession that is uncommonly explored in popular media.

How far will it go in representing the real thing?

It’s a great opportunity for people to learn and understand why interpreters are extremely useful in varying situations and can have a hugely positive effect on a person’s wellbeing.

Some of these examples are:

  • Interpreters are trained professionals in specific languages, meaning they can ensure communication between sides is as clear as possible.
  • Having an interpreter allows you to speak in your native language, ensuring you express yourself succinctly.
  • Using an interpreter helps minimise possible costly misunderstandings.
  • If properly briefed, an astute interpreter can help you with presentations and negotiations by working with you to achieve goals.
  • Interpreters assist in overcoming cross cultural differences and can act as guides in cross cultural matters.

For ‘Les interpreters’ to promote a positive message and portray interpreters in the correct way, it must make the distinction clear between real life and fiction.

The show does promote our profession and next year we could see a big increase in the number of students wanting to study interpreting as a result.
